There is currently a class action lawsuit against Hyundai for alleged premature engine failure in certain 2015-16 Hyundai Sonata, Tucson and Santa Fe vehicles containing the GDI engines. It is alleged that these models may contain a defect predisposing the engines to experience engine bearing failure, connecting rod knock and/or engine oil sludge. As a result, these issues lead to catastrophic engine failure along with safety issues and costly repairs. Unfortunately, and according to the lawsuit, Hyundai often declines to repair and/or replace the defective engines under warranty. As a result, current and former owners and lessees are often forced to pay for such repairs out-of- pocket. The case is captioned Kinnick v Hyundai (case no. 8:17-cv- 02208) and is currently pending in the Central District of California.
